New Royal Gorge Patrol Off to a Great Start
Thanks to a fantastic response over the past month by Mother Lode and Eastern Sierra patrollers, the brand-spanking-new Royal Gorge Ski Patrol now has 32 volunteer members. All are seasoned patrollers and all but two have a “primary” patrol to which they devote the majority of their NSP service days. Secondary members will patrol a minimum of five days this season; ten for primaries. Starting in January we will be recruiting from the general skiing populace, and hope to have many new candidates in OEC classes next year.
This new patrol has been designed to permit experienced Alpine and Nordic backcountry patrollers to learn the art and science of resort skinny skiing “on the job.” Many of our new patrollers are not yet experts on skinny skis and will need both lessons and trail time to develop their Nordic skating or classic chops. Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort has helped immeasurably by including season passes, free lessons, free use of rental gear, and pro deals in its generous benefit package. We are still accepting applications from experienced patrollers for this season, so if any of you have been hankering to try this graceful and highly-aerobic sport at a world-class cross-country resort just contact Patrol Rep Mike Kelly at
