Mountaineering
Mountaineering Program
The primary goal of the Mother Lode Region Mountaineering program is to provide basic knowledge regarding safety and travel in the mountain environment. The program consists of three basic classes:
MOUNTAIN AND AVALANCHE AWARENESS
This course provides inexperienced mountain enthusiasts with basic knowledge regarding safety and travel in the mountain environment. Although the course is intended to inform people who participate in winter activities, many of the core concepts could easily be adapted for the summer months. This course is not designed to teach the mountaineering or avalanche skills necessary to be proficient in the backcountry, nor is it intended to teach rescue skills needed to be a ski patroller.MOUNTAIN TRAVEL AND RESCUE 1
Provides students with the knowledge and skills to travel in reasonable comfort and safety in an outdoor environment and to assist in search and rescue. Primarily taught in a classroom environment with outdoor application so students can demonstrate proficiency in an outdoor setting. This class is offered at least once a year.MOUNTAIN TRAVEL AND RESCUE 2
Provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan and conduct a successful multi-day trip into a winter environment and to be effective search and rescue leaders. Offers hands-on experience in route finding, emergency bivouac, and problems that arise in search and rescue situations. Participation in a mock search and rescue exercise is required.
